Der Reichsapfel des Earl of Rochester - The orb of the Earl of Rochester

Until now, I was a bit reluctant to show this piece. This is probably, because it was inspired by a movie.
The film “The Libertine” tells us the story of the last years of the Earl of Rochester.
He was - given in the movie by Johnny Depp as a kind of baroque Jim Morrison- an aristocratic bon vivant and a poetic pornographer, who has written plays.

I found the combination of erotic burlesque at the theatres of this time together with an idea of refinement – almost in a sense Oscar Wilde had embodied- quite fascinating.

The result was a sovereign’s orb- the symbol of nobility- crowned by a pussy instead of a cross. Hidden in the interior there is a kind of pocket- peep show, surrounded by flowers.

Actually the piece should have been exhibited at the first online exhibition of the “Iron Brush Forum”. For different reasons this exhibition never happened.

The globe was made out of hammered half-balls of copper –shibuichi maze gane.  The bronze cat and the copper rim of the locking mechanism were dusted with gold.

The stage which is embellished with engraved flowers can rotate due a tiny ball bearing. This way the little silver lady can be seen from all sides.

Renaissance Punk

It has been a long time since I wrote an entry into my Blog and it is the first one in 2011 as well.

A Happy New Year for all readers.

I want to show a recently finished work of mine.

It is my interpretation of a classical skull ring. Despite my somewhat mixed emotions towards an almost trite topic which tends to be kitschy, I found the formal aspects  like the tension between the large polished shapes, ornament and heavily structured forms a really interesting matter for a piece of jewellery.

Most interestingly, I think lately there are connections again between the old Vanitas motive and contemporary social developments.
The silver jewel was cast hollow.  It was engraved by hand using burins in the classical European manner and enamelled in Champlevé style.
